A Legacy of Academic Excellence & Vision Care
Nagpur served as the capital of Central Provinces & Berar since 1907 and became an important medical and academic center in Central India.
Government Medical College Nagpur was established in 1947 and later Indira Gandhi Government Medical College was founded in 1967, strengthening ophthalmic education and healthcare services in the region.
Today, Ophthalmological Society Nagpur proudly represents more than 300 ophthalmologists across different sub-specialities and continues to organize CME activities, workshops, scientific sessions, and public awareness programs.
1907
Nagpur became the capital of Central Provinces & Berar (CP & Berar), emerging as an important administrative and educational center in Central India.
1947
Government Medical College (GMC) Nagpur was established by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and became the only medical college across Central India stretching from Gwalior to Hyderabad.
1967
Indira Gandhi Medical College was established by Nagpur Municipal Corporation and later renamed Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) after being taken over by the Government of Maharashtra.
1969
Late Professor Dr. Ishwarchandra initiated monthly ophthalmic clinical meetings at GMC Nagpur where residents and practicing ophthalmologists presented clinical cases and exchanged knowledge.
1974
The All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) annual conference was organized at Nagpur, bringing together renowned ophthalmologists and academicians from across India.
1975
Using the surplus funds from the AIOS conference, the Vidarbha Ophthalmic Society (VOS) was officially formed to strengthen ophthalmic collaboration and education in the region.
1981-82
Dr. Satish Sule and Dr. Prafull Mokadam started organizing monthly CME sessions under the “Nagpur Academy of Ophthalmology (NAO)” at IMA Nagpur with interdisciplinary medical experts.
1985
Late Dr. S. U. Joshi became the first President of NAO followed by several distinguished ophthalmologists who contributed to the growth and academic excellence of the organization.
2015
Following directions from the Charity Commissioner, “Nagpur Academy of Ophthalmologists” was officially renamed as “Ophthalmological Society Nagpur (OSN)” under the leadership of Dr. Anant Gade and his executive committee.
Present Day
Today, OSN proudly represents more than 300 ophthalmologists from Nagpur and surrounding regions. The society conducts academic CME activities, scientific programs, workshops, and public awareness initiatives to advance ophthalmic healthcare and education.
